The Science of Gathering

Why local events punch so far above their weight in building community health.

The research on social connection is blunt: loneliness rivals smoking as a predictor of early mortality, and the decline of communal gathering spaces tracks closely with its rise. Third places — neither home nor work — are where weak ties form, and weak ties are what hold neighborhoods together.

Events are the renewable resource of third-place life. A block party does not require a permanent venue, a liquor license empire, or a budget line — it requires a host, a date, and a way to tell people.

That last clause is where most would-be hosts stall, and it is the specific friction Three Green Events removes. Organize, share, sell tickets — the administrative layer, flattened into an afternoon.

The platform's bet is that supply, not demand, is the bottleneck: plenty of people want to gather; not enough people feel permitted to host. Lower the cost of hosting and the gatherings follow.
