What Small Businesses Actually Need from Tech

Lessons from a development shop that builds for plumbers, pizzaiolos, and its own portfolio.

After years of building for small businesses and for the Three Green ventures themselves, Three Green Agency has a short list of what actually moves the needle — and it is rarely what the software industry is selling.

First: a website that loads fast and answers the three questions every customer has — what do you do, what does it cost, how do I reach you. Everything else is decoration.

Second: owned communication channels. A Google Workspace address and a mailing list outperform any social following, because algorithms change and address books do not.

Third: one automation at a time. Scheduling, invoicing, review requests — pick the task that eats the most hours and automate only that. The businesses that drown in software are the ones that bought ten tools before fixing one problem.

The agency's casework follows this philosophy, and this column will keep publishing the playbook as it evolves.
