No Signup, No Feed: The Design of Tank Talk

Tank Talk, the discussion layer of 3G's Drink Tank, makes three unusual design choices: no signup, no persistent identity beyond a shared group title and code, and no algorithmic feed deciding what you see.

Each choice removes a known distortion. Accounts create performance pressure — people talk to their reputation, not to each other. Feeds create audience-seeking — the most provocative take rises, not the most honest one. Signup friction kills exactly the casual, honest participants a good conversation needs.

What remains is close to the original social network: a group of people who share a context, talking. The title-and-code mechanism is a modern version of the unlisted phone number — known to the people who should know it, invisible to everyone else.
